Residencies

There's nothing like spending a week in a classroom inspiring kids with what you do. And you do all kinds of good work. Whether it's making music or protecting the environment, our goal is to ignite sparks so those kids, their families, and their school community will burn with passion for the good work you do.

Here's a taste of some of the residency programs we've created:

Crystal Bridges in the Classroom

AIS runs a partnership program between Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and ten partner schools in Little Rock. Every year, we spend one to two weeks at each school. One of the things we do during our week with each school is a residency with either the 4th or 5th grade. Every day for that week, students use a work from Crystal Bridges's collection to connect to content they're already learning through art-making. Sometimes, inspired by Mark Tansey's Landscape, we make collages of ourselves as one of the three forms of rocks. Sometimes, inspired by Joan Mitchell, we make blues music to connect to a literacy theme of survival. Sometimes, as in the video below, we make an interactive art installation of a factory inspired by Thomas Hart Benton's Steel Mill and connected to 5th grade science standards involving the responsible use of resources. And, as with all our residencies, the students get a field trip--in this case, to Crystal Bridges.

Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas with Dollarway Schools

AIS has facilitated a deep investment by ASC in the students of Dollarway High School in Pine Bluff. In a series of residencies throughout the academic year, AIS uses drama-integrated teaching techniques to engage students in writing. Each residency is built around ASC's current exhibition and Dollarway's current literacy standards. As a culmination, students see the works that have inspired their writing at ASC.

The Conway Symphony Orchestra at Ellen Smith Elementary

AIS works with the CSO to cultivate the next generation of classical music lovers. Over the course of a week, AIS works with 4th graders at Ellen Smith to prepare for a night at the Symphony while creating some music of their own. All of this exposure to music is underscored by its connections to literacy. Their hard work is celebrated with a field trip to see the Conway Symphony play.
